unlock is illegal

Never thought 2013 will begin with such crappy news. This is something against our freedom. Freedom of what we want to do about something we paid and own.

But it’s true that UNLOCKING phones is NOW iLLEGAL.

Though it won’t apply to the phone you have unlocked till Jan25, 2013. As iPhone tops the most unlocked phones in US, carrier like T-Mobile might start suffering, since it’s the no. 1 carrier of choice for unlocked iPhone users.

And even with the other phones, Now your cellphone carriers won’t unlock your phone like earlier days when you would call them and say you were going out of the country.

This law sucks, wish Americans were like Nepalese, who would protest against such crap.

ADDED:
If one does Unlock, what’s the damage ?
Civil penalties are based on the carrier’s actual damages and any additional profits of the violator, or a court can award statutory damages of not less than $200 or more than $2,500 per individual act. Criminal penalties are even more severe: any person convicted of violating section 1201 willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain (1) shall be fined not more than $500,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both, for the first offense; and (2) shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both, for any subsequent offense.

  1. I think it’s the right move. Apple gives cost/installments advantage to whoever buys the locked iphone. Unlocking it is like stealing from apple. It gives user the option to buy factory unlocked iphone at higher cost without installment advantage. And btw, there’s android phones giving similar feature at lower cost for those that don’t like such restrictions.
